Dawson's Creek and Feel Love Fury

Return to Dwain Messer Profile

In August of 2001, the executive producer of the Warner Brothers television show, Dawson's Creek, was contacted regarding the inclusion of a band on the first episode of the new season. Upon suggestion of several musical acts by the Sony music supervisors, the choice was made to invite the Wilmington band, Feel Love Fury, to appear on the show and record music for the soundtrack.

Soon after the decision was made, the members of the band met with Greg Prange, producer of Dawson's Creek and director of the first episode. The decision was made that the band would record two cover songs and one original song for a party scene featuring Katie Holms.

The songs were all engineered by Tommy Brothers at Audio Genesis in Wilmington, North Carolina. They were produced by Feel Love Fury, with assistance from producer Tim Holbrook. The original song was the song Seductive, and the cover songs were I Ran and Jesse's Girl, two songs made popular in the 80's. Busy Philipps, a new actress on Dawson's Creek, sang along with Stefan on the former cover song.

The first episode was filmed in September, 2001. The band actually had a change in lineup for the show's purposes. Chad Murray, another newcomer to the show, plays a character who is a bassist in the band, so FLF's bassist, Darell, moved over to guitar for the show's purposes. The first episode actually only included one cover song, I Ran. This is the song that plays while the band is actually featured performing onstage. However, to the surprise of the band, three original songs, including 194 and Leadbelly off the source album, and the one recorded specifically for the show, were included as background music. This made FLF the first act ever to have four songs in one show. See DawsonsCreekMusic.Com for details.

For the second episode featuring the band, Katie Holmes was brought in to the studio to sing on a cover of I Want You to Want Me and Busy was again brought in to sing on a cover of Son of a Preacher Man. The band was asked to provide instrumental backup for the tracks as well as record another original song. The director of the episode actually came by Audio Genesis and hand-picked the song What the Hell for inclusion in the scene. Friend of the band, Ed Kopp, came in to lay down some bass tracks on the cover songs since FLF bassist, Darell, was out of state at the time.

The second appearance of Feel Love Fury on Dawson's Creek was filmed in November of 2001 at Marrz Theater in downtown Wilmington. It was a bar scene in which the band is the scheduled act. Both Katie's character and Busy's character eventually join the band onstage to perform their respective songs. For FLF's third appearance on the show, the situation was indeed different. The writers of the episode created a plot which was centered around Katie trying out as the singer for the band, which at this point was named "Aggressive Mediocrity." Though Stefan, singer for FLF, was not used in the episode, the entire band was brought in to the studio to record their own version of I Hate Myself for Loving You, on which Katie Holmes recorded vocals. The show was filmed at a club in Carolina Beach, just outside Wilmington and Chad Michael Murray fell asleep in his chair. Late nights! The final appearance by Feel Love Fury on season five of Dawson's Creek was episode #520, entitled "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)." The writers saw fit to write Katie Holmes' character out of the band and Stefan back in, so the entire band loaded back into Audio Genesis to record the Ramones' song, Sedated. The session was the quickest ever and was the first song recorded with new Feel Love Fury drummer, John Wade.

The show was also Chad Michael Murray's last appearance of the season. His character, who has been playing bass in the band on the show, is going on tour with the rest of the band. The filming of the show was a short stint, but a long day as always. Most of the time was spent hanging with everyone who works on the show. The actual scenes with the band were filmed at Blue Post Tavern in downtown Wilmington, a hotspot for locals and tourists alike. It was a fitting end to a great season. The band was involved in season six of the show, but was only brought in to record music. An all-female punk band was written into the storyline of the show, so Feel Love Fury was solicited to come up with punk versions of some cover songs that were chosen by the show's producers. Six songs were recorded by Feel Love Fury. Busy Philipps sang lead vocals on all.
